The medical school at Argentina’s Universidad Nacional del Sur – or the National University of the South – will offer a course on the use and prescription of medicinal cannabis to third-year students.
The country’s nascent MMJ program – created in 2017 – has been hobbled by a lack of domestic supply, high prices and low doctor participation.
The move by the university could help ease the latter, eventually increasing accessibility for medical cannabis patients as more physicians become familiar with various treatments.
“The idea is for students to understand how tetrahydrocannabinol works, how it works in the body and what the therapeutic indications are,” Pedro Silberman, dean of the Department of Health Sciences, told the La Nueva newspaper.
All medical cannabis in Argentina is imported, which raises prices and limits accessibility.
