State-By-State: Legal Overview, Market Data and Outlook | Chapter 2 MJBIZDAILY.COM SUMMARY What to watch in 2020 Operating in one of the most restrictive MMJ markets in the United States, Minnesota’s two licensed medical cannabis providers have struggled to attain profitability. Tens of millions of dollars in losses have run parallel to the slow growth of Minnesota’s program, but registered patient numbers have increased more rapidly in recent years, spurred in part by an expansion of the list of qualifying conditions to include autism, sleep apnea, post-traumatic stress disorder and pain. A bill passed during a special session will allow cultivators to open eight dispensaries each―doubling the current number―which might enhance the state’s two cultivators’ profitability and lower costs for patients. Marijuana Business Opportunity Rank for 2020 C With the only two MMJ business licenses allowed already claimed, there are no business opportunities for new plant- touching companies in the state. But the two licensed companies could see some much-needed sales growth in the near future after an increase in patient numbers and additions to the list of qualifying conditions along with a new bill allowing them to double the number of dispensaries they may operate from four each to eight each.
