National Trends | Chapter 1 MJBIZDAILY.COM Oklahoma’s medical marijuana system is one of the most business-friendly in the country, with no license caps, no qualifying conditions and low license and application fees. The number of growers, processors and retailers per capita in Oklahoma far surpasses that of any other program in the country, and easy access has caused patient numbers to boom. As of press time, more than 234,000 Oklahomans had received MMJ recommendations. Patient numbers have increased in all but a handful of MMJ states ― those with recreational programs, such as Colorado and Oregon. And even in those states, declines have been in the low single digits. However, patient counts in major markets such as California and Michigan will likely see significant declines after their recreational programs get off the ground. Looking forward, nationwide patient growth will be driven by states with recently launched MMJ programs, including Florida, Maryland, Ohio, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, because of their relatively liberal licensing and recommendation systems. States that have legalized but have yet to begin MMJ sales ― such as Georgia, Louisiana, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia ― have implemented far stricter programs that will likely keep patient counts from reaching their full potential.
