The first medical cannabis sale in Louisiana could take place by the end of summer.

That’s the proposed timeline for the opening of an MMJ pharmacy in the southern state, slightly two years after Gov. John Bel Edwards signed into law a new but very restrictive medical cannabis program.

The pharmacy, Rx Greenhouse, obtained preliminary approval from the state to begin operations by Sept. 1, The Times-Picayune reported.

Rx Greenhouse was chosen from a pool of eight applicants to run an MMJ pharmacy in the New Orleans area.

The pharmacy will be located in Metairie, a New Orleans suburb, but it’s awaiting final approval from the Louisiana Pharmacy Board.

The board will also be licensing another eight MMJ pharmacies, for a total of nine across the state’s health-care regions, The Times-Picayune reported.

Louisiana law does not allow for cannabis flower to be sold at MMJ pharmacies; only pills, topicals and oils will be allowed for patients.

Rx Greenhouse also operates a dispensary in Maryland.
