The Libertarian Party of Florida is throwing its weight behind a November ballot measure that would legalize adult-use cannabis, and recent polling suggests passage.
“This amendment reflects the growing recognition that individuals should have the freedom to make their own choices regarding cannabis use,” Matthew Johnson, the party’s vice chair and communications committee chair, said in a Monday post on the party’s website.
The Tallahassee Democrat first reported the endorsement.
Amendment 3, which requires 60% voter approval, would allow recreational marijuana sales to Floridians 21 and older at existing medical marijuana treatment centers as well as possession of up to 3 ounces of cannabis.
Home grows would be restricted, a measure backed by several marijuana multistate operators in Florida and opposed by consumer advocates and the state’s Libertarian Party, among others.
“We must continue to advocate for the right to homegrown cannabis, allowing Floridians to cultivate their own plants for personal use,” Johnson added.
“This would ensure that individuals have the ability to control their own supply and reduce dependence on commercial entities.”
In May, the executive board of the Republican Party of Florida voted to oppose Amendment 3, days after Gov. Ron DeSantis indicated he planned to take an active role in helping to defeat the initiative.
Meanwhile, a poll conducted June 26-29 and obtained by Florida Politics revealed that more than 64% of respondents in the state supported legalization.
A Fox News poll in June indicated even greater support at 66%.
