The owners of a planned Las Vegas dispensary held a ceremonial groundbreaking on Monday despite being told at one point – by their lawyer no less – that they had a “snowball’s chance in hell” of making it this far.

Desert Aire Wellness won’t begin selling medical cannabis to patients until the end of summer, and it already has a building. But the five women who own it wanted to hold a ceremony to thank management and staff and celebrate their progress so far, according to a report from Channel 8 News.

The owners teamed up with high-powered lobbyist and lawyer Jay Brown less than a year ago to make their dream of owning a dispensary a reality.

Brown wasn’t convinced, saying the women had a slim chance of getting one of the coveted permits to operate in Las Vegas, considered prime real estate for dispensaries thanks to a provision in Nevada’s dispensary law that allows them to sell to visitors with a valid medical marijuana card, The Verge reported.

The storefront is on the North Strip, near Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Ave.

The business is only one of 12 that has received approval from both the state and the county, according to Channel 8 News.

The owners were always confident that they’d get a dispensary license, partly due to the fact that the business is women-owned.
