It’s been a rough start to the new year for Colorado medical marijuana businesses, which find themselves in the crosshairs as the Drug Enforcement Agency widens its assault on the cannabis industry.

So it’s an ideal time for the Medical Marijuana Business Alliance – a trade organization for the state’s MMJ industry – to hold its monthly meeting.

The gathering, scheduled to start at 6 p.m. tonight with an hour of networking followed by a panel discussion, will include an update on the federal government’s actions against marijuana dispensaries in Colorado. Local cannabis business owners are clamoring for information and a forum to vent their frustration, and this presents the perfect venue for them to discuss their concerns with experts and other professionals.

Last week, U.S. attorneys sent warning letters to 23 dispensaries in Denver and around the state, threatening to shut the pot businesses down and seize their assets if they don’t close or relocate within 45 days. The letters were sent out to cannabis businesses located within 1,000 feet of schools, as well as the landlords of these marijuana dispensaries.

Aside from creating confusion, the move has spread fear throughout the state’s MMJ industry: Government sources said the warning letters are simply the “first step” in the Colorado medical pot crackdown.

MMBA organizers initially intended to focus tonight’s event on introducing alliance members to major cannabis industry groups and to talk about the coming year. But now they’ll also discuss the attorney letters and the government’s next steps, as the issue will most certainly generate a lot of buzz.

The event will feature an industry panel that includes Nick King of Act 4 Colorado, Bob Hoban of the Cannabis Business Alliance, Mike Elliott of the Medical Marijuana Industry Group, Steve Fox of the National Cannabis Industry Association and Brian Vicente of Sensible Colorado.

The gathering is free for industry professionals, but MMBA requests that attendees RSVP online. If you have a question for the panel, you can submit them in advance. Those who do so ahead of the meeting will receive higher priority.

The meeting will be held at Casselman’s Bar & Venue, 2620 Walnut St., Denver, CO.
