Protest at Second Seattle Retail Cannabis Store

Not everyone in Washington State is happy about recreational marijuana.

The second legal rec shop in Seattle saw roughly 200 protesters gather outside its doors on Sunday, chanting “Shut it down!” as a pastor with a bullhorn led parishioners in an anti-marijuana rally.

The store, Uncle Ike’s, is located next door to the Mt. Calvary Christian Center, and its members are upset that the shop is so close.

Pastor Reggie Witherspoon told the crowd that the center would work in concert with the state Legislature to change the law. Some at the protest also called for a constant rally every weekday from noon to 5 p.m. until Ike’s either closes or moves.

“We have to be doing all the legal things we have to do. We’re not stopping here,” Witherspoon said, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Seattle City Councilman Bruce Harrell said he’s looking into how Ike’s was allowed to open so close to a church.

The protest seemed to have a short-term impact on business, as customer traffic slowed to a crawl. But customers reportedly returned shortly after the protestors disbursed.
