Rhode Island’s three medical cannabis dispensaries could be in for a big boost in their customer base if a proposal to add post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of qualifying MMJ conditions becomes law.

A Rhode Island senator unveiled the legislation on Monday, saying it’s responsibility to help treat military veterans suffering from PTSD.

Currently, there are just under 13,000 registered patients in the state that use MMJ for 11 approved medical conditions. Adding PTSD to the list could grow the patient pool by thousands, which in turn would create millions more in annual revenues for the state’s medical cannabis industry.

Less than half of all states that have legalized medical cannabis include PTSD on their qualifying conditions list. But some have added it to their programs in recent years – including Arizona, which was ordered to do so by a judge.
