Edibles producers in Vermont may soon have to invest in a host of upgrades to their products and processes, which could prove costly and time consuming.

State policymakers are considering a bill that would implement new rules on medical marijuana edibles, including requirements that such products use child-resistant packaging and feature dosing information on labels, according to Vermont Public Radio.

The bill comes in advance of a possible measure to legalize recreational cannabis via the state Legislature. That potential legalization measure is serving as the main catalyst for possible changes in edibles regulations, according to VPR.

“We just decided that we would address it here, because if it’s going to come to us later, we should address it now,” state Sen. Jeannette White told the radio station.

Vermont is home to four MMJ dispensaries, at least two of which produce their own edibles.
