This snapshot of the weighted average spot price per pound of marijuana for the last week of April 2019 shows prices in mature dual markets ― Colorado, Oregon and Washington ― are below nationwide averages, as these states continue to grapple with rampant overproduction. Generally, states with tighter regulations ― like caps on the number of licensed growers ― have higher prices, such as Connecticut, Illinois and Rhode Island. There are no licensing caps in Massachusetts’ recreational market, but prices have been bolstered by strong sales and out-of- state visitors as the Eastern Seaboard’s first rec market thrives nearly six months in. Prices in Alaska have stayed high as the state continues to find a balance between supply and demand and to overcome the obstacles of producing an agricultural crop year-round with challenging outdoor conditions and a short growing season, coupled with high utility costs for indoor grows.
