Although recreational stores serve more clients per day than medical dispensaries, MMJ patients spend, on average, 45%more per transaction than recreational customers. In both medical and recreational markets, patients and customers are restricted in the amount of marijuana they may purchase at once, and in many medical markets there are weekly, monthly or quarterly restrictions as well. Because patients are using cannabis to treat a diagnosed condition, it is possible that patients are making less frequent trips to the dispensary but spending more per trip than what is observed for customers purchasing recreational cannabis.
