New Jersey legislators are scheduled to vote Monday on a proposed amendment to allow voters to decide in 2020 whether to legalize recreational marijuana in the state.

The decision came after the Democratic-controlled full Assembly and the Senate held hearings on the proposed referendum, as required by law.

The proposed amendment must pass with a three-fifths majority in both chambers in a single year or with a simple majority in two consecutive years in order to appear on the ballot.
