Sole MMJ dispensary opens in Delaware

Delaware’s only licensed medical cannabis dispensary officially opened in the northern town of Wilmington on Friday, bringing another state under the MMJ industry’s umbrella.

First State Compassion Center welcomed its first patients in the morning, and lines formed 50-people deep at times, according to the News Journal.

Though Delaware legalized MMJ in 2011, the program has moved forward in fits and starts. The dispensary also had to overcome a bevy of administrative delays and was also stalled by construction problems.

The law allows for three dispensaries statewide, but the governor is allowing just one at this time. There are currently about 170 registered patients in the state. Officials could approve more dispensaries down the road if demand warrants, but the patient base would likely have to be much higher.
