Total sales of adult-use and medical marijuana in Illinois topped a record $2 billion in 2024.
With $1.72 billion in recreational cannabis sales and $285.1 million in medical marijuana sales, according to state data, Illinois has the third-biggest sales market in the country.
Illinois’ 2024 total of $2.007 billion is a modest increase from 2023, when total sales reached $1.96 billion.
Only Michigan ($3.3 billion in sales) and California (on pace for $4 billion, according to the most recent data) produced larger sales numbers last year.
California has yet to publish fourth-quarter figures from 2024 but posted roughly $1 billion in taxable sales over the first three quarters.
Illinois also broke monthly sales records in 2024, according to the Marijuana Herald.
The state’s accumulative cannabis sales of $176.7 million in December set a monthly record – breaking the previous mark, $172 million, set the previous month, the Herald reported.
Flower, called “usable marijuana” in Illinois, represents the bulk of cannabis sold in the state.
The second-most-popular product is “extract for inhalation” or vape cartridges. Edibles are third.
The December breakdown was:
- $85.3 million in marijuana flower.
- $57.9 million in vapes.
- $23.5 million in edibles.
Though the increase in sale dollars from 2023 to 2024 is relatively modest, a decline in overall product prices means more marijuana is being sold.
The average price per gram of flower in December dipped to $8.61, down from $9.84 a year ago.
The price per gram of extracts in December was $52.21, down from $66.13 a year ago.
