The average price of cannabis items sold dropped from $28.79 in May 2025 to $26.61 for the same month this year.

Missouri’s cannabis market posted another milestone in May, reaching a record $135.07 million in monthly sales as many mature cannabis markets across the country continue to struggle with flat or declining revenue.

May sales included $124.24 million in adult-use products and $10.83 million in medical marijuana, making it the strongest month in the state’s history for total sales, adult-use sales and daily sales average, according to the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services.

The average price of items sold dropped from $28.79 in May 2025 to $26.61 in May 2026, according to data analytics firm Headset.

“The slight decrease in average prices, paired with a 7.7% increase in total units sold year-over-year, highlights a shift toward value-driven purchasing and possibly more frequent, smaller transactions,” according to Headset, which reported lower total sales than the health department.

How much of Missouri’s growth is coming from adult-use sales?

Retailers averaged $4.36 million in sales per day, topping the previous record set in April, when daily sales averaged $4.32 million.

The new monthly high illustrates Missouri’s status as one of the more resilient state marijuana markets in the U.S. While growth is slowing from the early boom that followed the February 2023 launch of adult-use sales, Missouri is still expanding at a time when several other states are experiencing pronounced softness.

May sales were up 1.7% from the $132.81 million recorded in May 2025, according to the health department.

Adult-use sales rose 5.69% year-over-year from $117.55 million, while medical sales fell 29.03% from $15.26 million, continuing a longer-term shift toward the recreational market.

Through the first five months of 2026, Missouri sales totaled $641.22 million, up 1.99% from $628.58 million during the same period a year earlier. Adult use accounted for $582.46 million of the total, or about 91% of all sales.

May’s performance builds on Missouri’s record-setting 2025, when retailers generated $1.5 billion in cannabis sales, up 4% from 2024, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

How do Missouri’s cannabis sales compare to other states?

By comparison, other state cannabis markets have lost momentum.

Colorado’s marijuana sales fell to $1.32 billion in 2025, down from $1.4 billion in 2024. Colorado sales peaked at $2.23 billion in 2021, according to the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Despite declining sales, Colorado is considering an increase in its excise tax of less than 1 percentage point. That would bring the total levy on legal cannabis in markets like Denver to 27%.

Michigan implemented a tax increase on Jan. 1 that significantly depressed legal sales.

Michigan cannabis retailers reported $227 million in sales in January – a nearly 16% decrease from the $270 million recorded in December.
