Kansas City, Missouri, may soon allow marijuana retail stores to operate 24 hours a day.

A proposed tweak to city zoning law would allow cannabis retail shops and medical marijuana dispensaries located at least 1,000 feet from residential zones to be open 24/7, according to KMBC News.

If shops don’t meet that zoning requirement, they can continue to operate between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The city’s Neighborhood Planning and Development Committee was scheduled to consider the measure on Tuesday, with a recommendation for approval from city staff, according to a meeting agenda.

All-night cannabis sales considered in Kansas City

Missouri voters approved recreational cannabis in 2022. Since then, it’s grown into a $1.5 billion annual market, one of the strongest in the country.

Several Missouri cities already allow 24-hour cannabis sales, according to the Kansas City Star.

Five of Kansas City’s 22 existing marijuana stores could potentially apply for a 24-hour permit, according to a city memo.

All cannabis stores are still required to comply with Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services rules, including locating at least 1,000 feet form elementary and secondary schools, 300 feet from churches and daycare centers and 2,000 feet from other stores.

Where are cannabis dispensaries open 24 hours?

Round-the-clock cannabis sales are rare outside of New Mexico and Nevada, MJBizDaily has reported.

Las Vegas is home to several 24-hour dispensaries, including The Grove and Thrive Cannabis Marketplace, that cater to both tourists and locals, according to the companies’ websites.

A few New Mexico marijuana stores such as Munchiez Cannabis Dispensary, Score 420 and Cannaverse in Las Cruces also have adopted 24/7 operations, according to the company websites.

Still, mature markets like California and Colorado impose stricter limits, with marijuana stores typically closing by 10 p.m. or midnight, depending on local regulations, those states’ regulatory websites say.
