The U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), publicly voiced his support for medical marijuana in an interview Thursday.

Explaining his position, Reid pointed to his personal experience witnessing how cannabis aided a friend’s ailing son, as well as the growing media coverage of individuals who receive medical benefits from using marijuana.

Reid becomes the latest high-profile supporter in this area, joining Sanjay Gupta‘s change of heart from last year. In fact, Reid called out CNN’s coverage as one source of his information on the issue.

While he specifically defined his support as being for the medical side of the industry only at this time, Reid gave hints that he could move further on this issue. “I guarantee you one thing. We waste a lot of time and law enforcement going after these guys that are smoking marijuana,” he said.
