Cann Group has received the first federal government license to grow medical cannabis in Australia and has submitted an application for a cultivation permit.
The new license permits the privately held company to legally grow medical marijuana and conduct research on how to use cannabis for medicinal purposes, according to Business Insider Australia.
Cann Group also has filed paperwork with federal regulators to receive a cultivation license and said it was confident it would get the green light.
The licensing comes after Australia legalized MMJ last year for patients with chronic or painful illnesses.
Australia won’t be using the dispensary model that other nations employ. Pharmacies will sell to MMJ patients instead.
Under federal law, patients can have access only to MMJ that has been approved under the Therapeutic Goods Act and relevant state and territory legislation, Business Insider reported.
Cann Group also does business in New Zealand and has partnered with U.S. edibles company Dixie Brands.
