Cannabis sales saw a sharp rise on 4/20 this year, particularly in newly legalized states.
Sales on 4/20 jumped 46.9% and transactions rose 46.6% compared to last year, according to online ordering platform Jane Technologies.
“Every 4/20 tells us something about where the industry is headed,” Jane Technologies co-founder and CEO Socrates Rosenfeld said in an email to MJBizDaily.
“This year’s message is simple: demand is still growing, new markets are still opening, and the operators investing in the shopper experience are pulling ahead.”
Jane analyzed sales from stores that were open in 2025 as well as this year to ensure the numbers were not inflated by new stores opening in 2026.
On April 20, retailers saw 73% more transactions than the day before.
Which states led the charge on 4/20?
2026 state highlights include:
- Illinois: No. 1 highest selling state with sales up 44.5% year over year
- California: up 25.8%
- Maryland: up 31.5%
- Nevada: down 2.7%
- New Jersey: down 1.1%
- Colorado: down 7.1%
Minnesota sales were up 150%, but the figure is skewed because of the state’s transition to recreational cannabis late last year.
What did cannabis shoppers buy the most?
While California’s 4/20 sales were an improvement over 2025, licensed cannabis retailers in the state reported $3.9 billion in sales last year, a significant drop from the $4.2 billion in 2024.
Flower was the top seller at 43% of sales, volowed by vape products at 27%, edibles at 14%, pre-rolls at 10% and extracts at 6%.
