Dispensaries and retail cannabis stores in Colorado sold nearly 150,000 pounds of marijuana flower last year as overall demand for MJ soared in the nation’s first recreational market, according to a new report by the state’s Department of Revenue.
Some highlights from the data-packed report:
– At the start of 2014, there were 399 licensed rec businesses and 1,335 licensed MMJ businesses. At the end of the year, there were 833 licensed rec businesses and 1,416 MMJ businesses, including retailers, cultivators, testing labs and infused product manufacturers.
– A total of 148,238 pounds of marijuana flower were sold in 2014, including 109,578 pounds of MMJ flower and 38,660 pounds of rec flower.
– Recreational edibles far outsold medical edibles, however. There were 2.85 million units of rec edibles sold last year, and 1.96 million units of medical edibles sold.
These numbers are all despite the fact that in the vast majority of local jurisdictions, the sale of both MMJ and rec is banned. Such bans are in place in 228 out of Colorado’s 321 jurisdictions.
