Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has signed into law a package of bills that will establish a statewide regulatory framework for the state’s longstanding medical cannabis industry.
Snyder signed three out of five bills that were approved by the state legislature over the last week and a half, MLive.com reported. The trio include the centerpiece, House Bill 4209, which establishes a licensing system for MMJ businesses. The next bill legalizes infused products, while the third mandates that MMJ businesses use a seed-to-sale tracking system.
The Michigan Legislature has been trying for years to agree on a regulatory system that will stabilize its MMJ industry, given that law enforcement raids on dispensaries have been ongoing basically since dispensaries began opening. The main problem is that although Michigan voters legalized MMJ in 2008, the initiative at the time didn’t explicitly allow for dispensaries and other related businesses.
The new system aims to end to raids in the long term, and give cannabis entrepreneurs more peace of mind that they can operate within a legal framework.
