West Hartford is the latest Connecticut town to enact a moratorium on medical marijuana businesses. Local officials voted on Tuesday to effectively prevent dispensaries and growers from participating in the first round of state licensing.
No surprises here: Such moratoriums are common in new markets, thanks in part to skittish politicians who still fear the “M” word.
Soliciting personal testimony from patients and caregivers can often help business owners sway officials weighing these types of measures.
But the West Hartford City Council wasn’t even persuaded by a patient with a brain tumor who had to be propped up by her husband while testifying about the benefits of the drug. Expect more Connecticut cities to move in this direction.
