The Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) approved a new law practice section specifically focused on marijuana, a move that could make it easier for a cannabis business operator to find a lawyer knowledgeable in the fast-growing and complex MJ industry.

California is the largest legal marijuana market in the world and attorneys are “increasingly playing a huge role in the creation and proliferation of cannabis companies,” according to the 15,000-member LACBA.

Across the country, finding a lawyer who understands local, state and federal rules regarding cannabis is considered crucial for marijuana businesses.

Because marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, lawyers help “cannabis players walk the fragile tightrope,” according to the LACBA.

“The cannabis industry is booming, perhaps like the next Gold Rush,” the association’s president, Ronald F. Brot, said in a statement.

The marijuana industry is so fast-moving that “one month in this industry is like a year in other industries,” Los Angeles attorney Josh Mandell, one of the founding members of the new cannabis section, said in a statement.
